Although traditional water treatment methods do a good job of removing chemicals and purifying water to make it suitable for drinking, hospitals need to have water that is suitable for use for intravenous injections. This water has to be as pure as possible, which means it should contain as few bacteria and microbial agents as possible and meet USP pharmaceutical standards.
Medical Uses for Water
Hospitals need to have purified water on hand to use when giving patients injections in order to dilute certain medications. Water for injection may also be used to help rehydrate patients who have become dehydrated, which can sometimes cause serious complications depending on the severity of the dehydration. While public water treatment facilities do a good job of removing most chemicals and organic matter from water, they don’t meet the same standards as USP water for pharmaceutical purposes. Since their water supplies don’t meet these standards on their own, hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities install their own additional water treatment equipment to help purify water.
To sterilize water for medical use, most hospitals have water treatment equipment that will remove any impurities that remain in regular water, such as chlorine and other chemicals that can interact with medications. These water purification systems usually do not contain chemicals or organic matter that can render useless. Instead, they use other technology, such as electromagnetic UV lamps, to help remove any contaminants remaining in previously treated water. These methods help to make the hospital’s water supply pure enough to meet the standards set for USP water for pharmaceutical purposes. This type of water treatment equipment is specially designed to meet the needs and supply the volume of water hospitals and other medical facilities use on a daily basis.
Although there are many different types of water purification equipment on the market, medical facilities have to use equipment that will make their water supplies compliant with USP pharmaceutical standards. These standards are rigorous because water used in medical treatments needs to be as pure as possible to inject into human bodies in order to help patients recover quickly.
